The FES technology used in Restorative Therapies equipment is the result of a collaboration of a team of engineers from the Kennedy Krieger Institute and a team of medical researchers from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.

FES is designed to limit and improve the harmful effects of physical conditioning and immobilization. The goal is to activate the motor nerves with the help of electrical stimulation to help create movement to rehabilitate affected muscles, and improve strength and function.

What Is FES?

FES is the use of one or more electrical stimulators with over-skin electrodes combined with an ergometer or a control box (Xcite), which causes muscle contractions in muscles that are weak or paralyzed in a synchronized manner for the execution of a movement.

The different muscle groups, normally involved in a functional gesture, are simultaneously activated by electrical stimulation in perfect synchrony with a device to create a functional activity, such as:

Cycling for upper and lowers limbs (RT300)
